Eastern Water Dragon

This eastern Water Dragon has been captured with a Nikon D2H Camera and a 105mm Nikon Micro lens. Whether you shoot with a Nikon or Canon there are lenses to suit this type of photography.

When photographing subjects such as this Water Dragon you need to keep your distance to avoid disturbing the animal, so a close up lens of 100mm of up to 200mm is a great advantage.

Photographing Animals with Nikon Super Telephoto Lenses

This fox has been photographed with a Nikon camera and 300mm telephoto lens. Generally for larger animals a 300mm lens like the  Nikon, Nikkor, 300mm f/4D IF ED AF-S Lens will be quite enough, however for smaller animals something a little longer may be required, or even sometimes something a little shorter.

Some of the alternative lenses suitable for animals are as follows:

Nikkor 200mm 2.0G ED AF-S VR II Lens Review

Nikkor 200mm f/4D IF ED AF Micro Lens Review

Nikkor 200-400mm f/4G ED ASF-S VR II Lens Review

Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S Lens Review

Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G ED VR Lens Review

Nikkor 500mm f/4G ED VR Lens Review

Nikkor 600mm f/4G ED VR Lens Review

Some of the lenses listed above are Zooms and are very suitable for animal photography as the lens angle of view can be varied, depending on the distance the photographer is from the animal.

Grass Hopper

Photographing insects is a wonderful way to get into the world of nature and wildlife photography. Subjects for nature photography can always be found in your garden.

The above image has been captured with a Nikon D700 and a 200mm Micro lens. There are a range of Nikon lenses suitable for this type of photography. The Nikon, Nikkor 200mm f/4D IF ED AF Micro Lens is a great lens for this type of work but is quite expensive. If something a little cheaper is required then try the Nikon, Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Micro Lens, this one is more compact and somewhat easier to handle. With the 200mm micro I generally use a monopod.

Jumping Frog

How can you capture an image such as this of the jumping frog.

Well for this image a Macro (Micro Nikkor) lens is suitable to enable you to focus close enough. Some of the more modern cameras are also suitable with a very fast frame rate to capture multiple images in a fast sequence.

I will summarise a few of the suitable Micro lenses suitable for this type of close up photography.

If you are using a Nikon DX camera then the Nikon, Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR AF-S DX Micro Lens is very applicable. However if you are using an FX camera then one of the following lenses can be used Nikon, Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Micro AF-S Lens or alternatively the longer Nikon, Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Micro Lens.

With any of the above lenses also use a fast electronic flash to freeze any motion of the jumping frog. Many electronic flash units will give a fast flash duration faster that any camera shutter speed.

This image has been captured at the Australia Zoo, Queensland, Australia. This is a wonderful place to capture a wide range of photographic subjects.

The camera used is a Nikon D2H and the Nikon, Nikkor, 300mm f/4D IF-ED AF-S, Lens.

This 300mm f/4 lens is very compact, easy to use and has excellent image quality.

Dwarf Tree Frog

This beautifulf dwarf tree frog, captured with a Nikon D700 and Nikon, Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Micro Lens This lens is excellent for close up photography and also for general photography, being one of my most used lenses.

Swimming Turtle

This swimming turtle has been captured with a Nikon D700 camera and 300mm lens. The 300mm lens is  ideal for these creatures as it enables you to keep a reasonable distance from the animal. It is very easy to handle this lens on a monopod to help stabilise it.

This turtle was photographed using a Nikon, Nikkor, 300mm, f/4D, lens.
